A Guide to Overcoming Church Conflict (book)

Conflict abounds in the church of Jesus Christ. Reconciliation within the body, however, will not happen with the right ‘method’ or ‘set of principles.’ In Making Peace, readers are challenged to place their church and all of its dissension under the Lordship of Jesus Christ.

“The church must faithfully embody and practice salvation as a way of life. We must come to see that reconciliation is not something we simply know or even do. It is who we are. Nor is it reserved for those occasional times of conflict. Rather reconciliation is a constant pursuit of holiness—a way of thinking, acting and being that forms us in the church as it changes our collective character, habits and practices.”

—Making Peace

Church conflict is neither isolated nor uncommon. Church pastors, governing boards, and denominational leaders spend a major portion of their time each year assessing, mediating, and reconciling church conflicts. You may be facing some level of conflict in your church or your life right now.

Making Peace collects the lessons and experience of more than ten years work in church-conflict reconciliation. Jim Van Yperen shares why churches become unhealthy and how God wants to heal them so they may become thriving communities of faith. He takes the reader through the stages of reconciliation from exploring the root causes of conflict and theological basis for the church as the instrument of reconciliation to moving from what we are doing wrong to how to do things right.

Making Peace is a “why” book not a “how-to” book. The Lordship of Jesus Christ, not method, should be the object and subject of your search for answers. The promise of Scripture is that God will allow nothing into our life that you are not able to bear through faith in Him. Whatever conflict or crisis you may now be facing, God will provide a way out or a way through for your good and His glory.
